Thursday – Good luck AS Chemists!

May 20, 2010

A chinese good-luck knot

I’m reliably informed (by the internet) that this is a Chinese good-luck knot. Although I know that it’s your hard work and revision that will see you through the unit 1 exam tomorrow…

Friday – the best choice for revision

May 14, 2010

Attention all AS/A2 chemists – Click the image above to link straight to the BestChoice revision site that you’ve all been using to excellent effect.

Monday – Save the ozone layer!

May 3, 2010

The ozone layer and how it is damaged by CFCs is something that comes up in AS chemistry and GCSE physics and chemistry. Find out more here, here and here.

Thursday – get ready!

March 11, 2010

Next week is science and engineering week – not just in our school but all over the country. Lots of really fun activities and events will be happening. Details to follow.

In the meantime, here are a couple of sites that some of you might like to visit:

Doc Brown’s Chemistry Revision – Amazing site with so much detail including A-level

S-Cool GCSE – Decent revision site for GCSE physicists needing a little extra help

Friday – Hoorah for exeat!

March 5, 2010

Have a brilliant weekend, whatever you do, even if you end up playing football with me tomorrow!

I couldn’t resist posting this…

For 4 Che 1 and L6 Che 2. And don’t forget, there’s still time to enter the competition, just click thisĀ link to go to Sunday’s post and leave a comment

Monday – Welcome back!

February 22, 2010

Apologies for failing miserably at posting over half-term. I was saving my energy for some really excellent posts now that we’re back at school. First of all, here’s a video for you:

A nice reversible reaction, which I’ll dedicate to 5 Che, L6 1 and L6 2 (who helped me film it).

Friday – Do elephants walk or run?

February 12, 2010

They walk/run apparently, according to research published in the Journal of Experimental Biology…

… Who knew? Slow day science news wise as you can see! In other news my cold is still causing me annoyance but rather less discomfort and half-term starts tomorrow. I will be posting next week, so do check back if you have a spare moment. Enjoy the break!

Oh, I almost forgot – 5 Phy and L6 chemists, I’ve updated my wiki site to include even more notes to help you with your revision.

Saturday night’s alright for blogging

February 6, 2010

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to walk up walls and on ceilings? It might just be possible soon…

I spotted this story on an excellent site called LiveScience, which has loads of fun science news, videos and games. In lessons today 2R looked at how energy is wasted in power stations, 5 Che did investigated the reaction of magnesium and hydrochloric acid and L6 Che 2 sat their dreaded test!

Multimedia Friday

February 5, 2010

Happy Friday everyone! Progress marches on here in the chemistry department… here’s our first homemade youtube clip!

A nice little demo using a super-saturated solution of sodium acetate, with help from Mr Currie and superb filming and commentary from Mrs Campbell. Thanks you two!

Oh, I almost forgot… L6 Che 2 – test tomorrow on 2.1-2.3 so plenty of revision tonight please; 4 Che – C2 test next week and rates worksheets to finish and 4 Phy – Test next week on P2 as well. Good luck!

January 16, 2010

After my lesson with 2R I’m feeling energetic, so here’s a picture from America where they’re trying to make nuclear fusion happen using an experiment called a Z pinch:

5 Che – Our practical today was the electrolysis of copper sulphate, you can find more information on that here. I’ve recorded your results and we’ll do some calculations on Monday.

L6 Che 2 – We started unit 2.2 on intermediate bonding and polarity. Hopefully after today you know exactly what electronegativity is all about!
