Wednesday – 2 posts. One amazing. One revision

IBM have made the World’s Smallest Movie  by pushing carbon atoms around with a scanning tunnelling microscope. It’s called ‘A boy and his atom’ and here it is:

Thursday – Happy… Thursday!

February 14, 2013

Good thing my new year’s resolution wasn’t to produce more blog posts! I would’ve failed miserably. Lots of revision on the cards from here on in though and I intend to use this blog and my Twitter as much as possible to help out with that.
Starting today with a video that should give you A-level chemists a few hints on how to determine shapes of molecules:

The star of the video is an American scientist and teacher called Tyler Dewitt. He’s got lots more great videos on various topics on his Youtube channel.

Thursday – Great job Boys (and Girls!)

November 29, 2012

This morning the Environmental Activity Group gave a presentation to the whole school in chapel and it was superb! The message was all about looking after the planet and why what we do as a school/individuals matters. Here are two really great video clips that they used to illustrate their point:

They even managed to include a quiz, which was of course won by the boys… but it was close so well done to the girls also. They finished with this poignant quote from the legend that is David Attenborough:

“One of the things I don’t want to do is to look at my grandchildren and hear them say: “Grandfather, you knew it was happening – and you did nothing.”

Tuesday – Some Incredible Research

November 20, 2012

Probably the most elegant piece of research I’ve seen in a while and a fantastic outcome:

Scientists at the University of Cambridge have used nerve cells from a dog’s nose to repair spinal damage and give the dog back use of its back legs! Jasper is looking healthy and doing well!

Wednesday – Thanks Ben!

Tuesday – Yawning tortoises? Must be Ig Noble time again!

October 10, 2011

See these two? Very cute right? Well yes they might be but apparently, according to research from the University of Lincoln, they don’t have much empathy for each others feelings, which was proven by the fact that tortoise yawns aren’t contagious!  And this research won the team behind it an Ig Noble prize for achievements that “first make people laugh, and then make them think”.

Wednesday – Scientific Tuesdays?!

June 8, 2011

As I’ve been a bit rubbish at posting recently… Here’s two for the price of one:

Scientific Tuesdays on Youtube

Firstly Roshan recommended this to me: Scientific Tuesdays is a great show on Youtube with loads of amazing experiments, some of which you can try at home like invisible ink from milk:

And here, for all you physicists revising for your unit 2 exam (good luck by the way!) is an inspirational photo of some of the most famous physicists that ever lived all hanging out together… You could be just as brilliant as famous as them one day!

Seriously, these guys made some incredible discoveries!

Saturday – Two very good ideas?

March 26, 2011

Two ideas from the world of Science this week – But are they any good?

1. The first is a project to drill down through the Earth’s crust to investigate what’s going on down in the mantle!

2. The second is an idea to combat the fierce heat in Qatar for the 2022 football world cup – Artificial clouds!
